Pros and Cons of Pre-Finished Wood
Advantages of Pre-Finished Wood
Pre-finished wood flooring products are becoming more popular each year. This growing popularity is a result of a few "advantages" afforded by pre-finished wood:
- The biggest factor is that you don’t have to go through a sanding and finishing job.
- Because of the lack of sanding, the job can be completed faster.
- The new finishes are very tough. In fact, the first real improvement in the last 20 years is the availability of clear finishes.
"Non-Advantages" of Pre-Finished Wood
Considering the realities of pre-finished wood, there are also a few "non-advantages," which, depending upon your point of view, may be large or small:
- Most prefinished wood products have a small groove between the boards or variations in the board surfaces.
- Though touch ups can be done to these floors, most are basically "as is" which is excellent; however, they cannot be manipulated as easily as a raw wood floor.
- Some of these floors are a "laminated" material which works very well over concrete surfaces but only have a thin layer of the desired wood.
- They are generally a bit more expensive than a raw floor that is finished in place.
